A car wash slab is the concrete platform on which a car wash operates, whether it’s a self-service bay, an automatic car wash, or a commercial wash pad for vehicles. Perhaps the most critical aspect is ensuring water flows off the slab efficiently. The slab is usually sloped towards one or more drains (often a central trench drain or point drains) so that all the soapy water, dirt, and runoff from washing go into a treatment system. A common design might be a 1–2% slope (e.g., 10–20 mm drop per meter) directed to a grated trench across the bay’s exit. This prevents water from pooling in the bay and allows for the quick draining of the large volumes of water used. The drainage system will be connected to a sump or interceptor to separate out mud and contaminants per environmental regulations.
A car wash slab is constantly wet when in use, so the concrete surface must provide traction. Typically, a broom finish or similar non-slip texture is applied to the concrete surface. This gives tires a good grip when driving in and out, and also helps people on foot avoid slipping. At the same time, the texture can’t be too rough, or it would be hard to clean and might trap dirt.
